ACOUSMA

IMALAT-HANE is delighted to announce Doga Unyaylar‘s first solo exhibition in Turkey, “Acousma”.
In the “Acousma” exhibition, the artist explores a unique relationship with auditory landscapes, noise, and sound. The artist records the sounds of their surroundings, analyzes them, and manipulates the recorded sounds to create sound sequences. These proper sequences construct an auditory landscape within the gallery setting, raising questions about how the surrounding sounds and noise can be evaluated and how sound’s temporal, spectral, and spatial changes are perceived and interpreted. The exhibition showcases works that encompass sound, installation, and experimental notation.

Furthermore, the artist is concurrently organizing many walks and discussions on sound and noise with the exhibition. The sound walks offer an interactive exploration of how sound perception and interaction with space are influenced. At the same time, the talks open up a discourse on the components and workings of the auditory landscape, an integral part of the sound and the environment.

Experience the transformative power of sound and its resonance with our shared experiences of living in an ever-vibrating world.
Doga Ünyaylar captures this essence in an urban earthquake of sound that echoes those that rattle our world, from the historic tremors of Lisbon to the more recent quakes in eastern Turkey.
The centerpiece of this unique showcase is a subwoofer enveloped in a cloak of triangular prisms, formed from art event brochures. This sonic landscape, an evocative city built on sound, emanates bass frequencies, pulsing like the heartbeat of the Earth itself.
These vibrations are more than mere sound waves; they mirror the aftershocks we experience in our daily lives, often unnoticed but profound in their effects. Doga invites us to attune ourselves to these oscillations, to listen to the 'magma' of our own existence. The exhibition also navigates the tension between the weight and lightness in our lives, gently reminding us that "Our life is lighter than we think."
